About the museum
In the landscape of Sikinos, amid cultivations with traditional terraces, the Episkopi dominates: a Roman mausoleum of the 3rd century AD that was converted into a domed Byzantine church. Continuous use of the monument has meant that it has survived almost intact, with elements from all its phases.
The monument was closed for 60 years because of severe deterioration and reopened to the public in 2022 after restoration work. During the works the undisturbed tomb of a woman named Neiko came to light; the mausoleum is believed to have been built for her. The restoration was honoured with the Europa Nostra 2022 European Heritage Award. Every year on 15 August a festival of the Virgin Mary is held in the area.
