About the museum
The hill of Skarkos lies in the middle of the western side of Ios. A significant archaeological site is being systematically excavated there, where human presence was continuous at least from the Early Cycladic I period to Late Antiquity. The building remains that dominate the hill belong to a large, flourishing settlement of the Early Cycladic II period, from the middle of the 3rd millennium BC.
The settlement is preserved in excellent condition and extends along two main streets up to 2 metres wide that encircle the summit of the hill. So far fifty-five buildings have been uncovered, most of them two-storeyed, with spacious entrances, stone-built staircases and paved floors. The finds include abundant pottery and stone tools. The conservation and presentation programme of the settlement was honoured in 2008 with the European Union / Europa Nostra Cultural Heritage Award.
