About the museum
The Agricultural Museum was founded in March 2005 (Government Gazette 402 of 29 March 2005), with the aim of highlighting the contribution of the Agricultural University of Athens to the modernisation and development of Greek agriculture and the rural world. Since 2008 the Documentation Centre for the History of Greek Agriculture, which holds the university’s archive, has operated on the same site.
The museum occupies about 2,000 square metres on two floors of the renovated building of the former Veterinary Institute, a pi-shaped building constructed in 1929 as a factory producing sera. The first exhibition of the collections was opened in 2010, on the occasion of the university’s 90th anniversary.
The collections include more than 1,000 scientific instruments and laboratory equipment, traditional agricultural tools and household utensils, as well as the works of the painter and teacher Manolis Vathis with plants of the Greek flora. The Mouseio Orykton kai Petromaton Elladas (Museum of Minerals and Rocks of Greece), a donation from Professor Eleftheria Davi, was installed on the site in 2009 and opened in its present form in 2013.
