About the museum
The battleship “Georgios Averof” was launched in 1910 and became a symbol of the Greek fleet. It took part in the Balkan Wars, in operations in Asia Minor and in the First and Second World Wars, and the naval battles of Elli and Lemnos are associated with its name. It was decommissioned in 1952 and remained moored at Poros until 1983.
In 1984 the Navy decided to convert it into a floating museum and moved it to Faliro, where it has been since, in the Odysseas Park of Naval Tradition – The Greeks and the Sea, near the Flisvos Marina. In 2010 it also became the headquarters ship of the Chief of the Hellenic Navy General Staff.
The ship retains its historic form, with narrow passageways and vertical ladders, and visitors walk along decks and spaces that bring them close to the everyday life of the crew. Since 2008 the floating museum has also included the trireme “Olympias”, a replica of an Athenian trireme built at the Tzakas shipyard in Keratsini and launched in 1987.
