About the museum

The Benaki Toy Museum opened to the public on 22 October 2017 in Palaio Faliro, in a building known as the “Castle of Toys”, at Leoforos Poseidonos 14 and Tritonos. It is part of the Benaki Museum.

The exhibits are based on the collection of Maria Argyriadi, which is considered one of the ten most important in Europe. The collector has been studying and gathering toys and dolls since the 1970s, and her collection numbers more than 20,000 objects linked to childhood: toys, books, ephemera and clothing from Europe, Africa, Asia and America.

The Greek Collection presents toys and objects from ancient Greece, the Roman and the Byzantine period, handmade objects from the 18th to the 20th century, festive and commercial toys of the 20th century, and table and traditional seasonal games. The European Collection includes toys and dolls from the 17th to the 20th century, mainly from Germany, France and the United Kingdom, as well as European dolls dressed in traditional Greek costumes.
