About the museum
Estia Nea Smyrnis maintains and operates museums in its mansion, with rare relics of Asia Minor Hellenism and of Hellenism in general. The collection was built up and enriched mainly through donations and bequests from its members and continues to grow. The museums occupy four main rooms of the mansion.
The Museum of Byzantine Art rests on a generous donation by the couple Georgios and Eleni Tsakyroglou from Smyrna, and includes about 450 Byzantine and post-Byzantine icons of the 15th–19th centuries, works by major Greek painters of the interwar period, personal objects of the donors, old coins and grave goods, as well as sculptures by Thanasis Apartis and Christos Kapralos. In the same space are displayed the waxwork of Saint Chrysostomos of Smyrna by the sculptor Loukia Georgantis and the “Panarmonio” of the musicologist Konstantinos Psachos.
The Museum of the Asia Minor Campaign presents relics, garments and personal objects of personalities of the Asia Minor Campaign, such as the national martyr Chrysostomos of Smyrna, Eleftherios Venizelos and General Anastasios Papoulas. The Museum of Art of Charilaos Chiotakis exhibits furniture and silver objects of the 17th and 18th centuries, silver miniatures, Chinese works of art and Delft porcelain. The fourth room is dedicated to contemporary culture, with toys and household objects from the 1950s to the present day.
