About the museum
The monastery was built on a low hill near the bank of the Aliakmonas, just outside the village of Panagia (Tournikí) in Grevena. Its foundation is linked with the well-known Byzantine family of the Tornikioi.
Only the two-storey katholikon survives from the complex. In 2011 it was moved about 140 metres higher up the hill, to save it from the waters of the hydroelectric dam of the Public Power Corporation (PPC). The monument is covered with high-quality wall paintings which, according to the surviving inscriptions, date to 1481 on the lower floor and to 1728–1730 on the upper floor.
