About the museum

In 1878, in a ravine near the village of Chromio, the first revolutionary uprising in Western Macedonia broke out against Ottoman rule and the Bulgarian Exarchate. To honour the uprising and the Macedonian fighters, the Association of Letters and Arts of the Kozani Prefecture created an open-air museum in 1989 on the very site of the uprising.

The aim of the museum is to present the course of Macedonian Hellenism from antiquity to 1912. The site includes busts of 21 Macedonian fighters, the museum of the fallen heroes, a monument with busts of Philip II, Aristotle and Alexander the Great, bridges, fountains and the restored church of Saint Nicholas, where the priest had blessed the weapons of the fighters in 1878.

In the museum building, photographs, prints and heirlooms of the fighters of Macedonia are displayed. Every year, at the end of September, a commemorative event for the Macedonian Struggle takes place on the site.
