About the museum

The Archaeological Museum of Aiani presents the historical development of ancient Aiani, capital of Elimiotis, one of the most powerful kingdoms of Upper Macedonia, and of the wider region, from prehistoric to Roman times. It mainly displays finds from the excavations of the ancient city.

The collections include finds from the Late Bronze Age (15th–12th century BC) and from the Archaic and Classical periods (6th–5th century BC), which illuminate the presence of Dorian and Macedonian tribes and of the Mycenaeans in the area, as well as the settlement and political organisation of Aiani from the 6th century BC.

The museum complex covers 4,500 square metres and includes seven exhibition rooms with a total area of 1,000 square metres, storerooms, a library, a multi-purpose hall and conservation workshops. The museum comes under the Ephorate of Antiquities of Kozani and has organised educational programmes and events since 1988.
