About the museum
Aiani was a city of Upper Macedonia and belonged to the kingdom of Elimiotis. It is identified with the settlement being excavated on the terraces of the hill Megali Rachi, 20 km from Kozani, in a fertile location near the middle course of the Aliakmon. The site was inhabited continuously from the Neolithic period to the end of the Hellenistic times.
Three large public buildings, sections of the road network and many private houses with rich finds have been excavated, showing an organised city already in the late Archaic and Classical periods. A circular cistern 8.5 metres deep, hewn into the rock, collected rainwater. In the neighbouring necropolis, tombs with grave goods from the Late Bronze Age to the late Hellenistic period were found.
