About the museum
The sanctuary was founded in the late 4th century BC near Delos and is linked to the building programme of the Antigonids and the Lagids (Ptolemies), who dominated the Cyclades at the time. In honour of Poseidon and his wife Amphitrite festivals, the Posidia, were held, with contests and theatrical performances in the ancient theatre of Tinos. In the 3rd century BC the sanctuary gained panhellenic fame, but it gradually declined and was abandoned in the mid-3rd century AD.
Among the buildings of the sanctuary, the temple stands out, where the large statues of Poseidon and Amphitrite were housed, works of the Athenian sculptor Telesinos; the altar; and the Great Stoa, one of the largest known in the Cyclades, with a length of up to 170 metres.
