Temporarily closed. The museum has remained closed since 2023 because of restoration works and renewal of the exhibition. The completion of the new exhibition has been announced, without a reopening date.

About the museum

The sculptor Giannoulis Chalepas was born in Pyrgos on Tinos in 1851 and died in Athens in 1938. His family home was bought in 1950 by the Community of Panormos Tinos, with funding from the Panhellenic Holy Foundation of Evangelistria, and was converted into a museum, which opened in 1971. The museum is run by the Panormos Cultural Centre “Giannoulis Chalepas”, a legal entity of the Municipality of Tinos.

Since 2023 the house has remained closed for restoration works, maintenance and renewal of the exhibition, which are funded by the Recovery Fund. The collection numbers 174 objects, of which 51 are on display: 16 drawings from the “metalogical” period, 23 sculptures from the first academic period (1876–1877), eight archive photographs, one relief medal, a handwritten note, and clothes and furniture of the artist.

The new exhibition is organised in four sections: chronology, art, technique and the artist’s life. On the upper floor his biography is presented with texts and digital applications, while on the ground floor the visitor learns about Chalepas’s art, technique and life on Tinos. Next to the house is the Museum of Panormite Artists.
