About the museum
The Istoriko Mouseio “Diexodos” was founded in 1998 by Nikos Kordosis, a lawyer from Mesolongi. It is housed in a house that predates the Revolution, on the city’s central pedestrian street. The house was built around 1760 to 1780 and was the family home of Athanasios Razis-Kotsikas, commander of the Garrison of the Exodus.
After decades of neglect the building was threatened with demolition so that an apartment block could be built on the site. The founder bought it, restored it with respect for its original features and opened it to the public. The aims are to save a historic building, to connect residents with the history of the town and to promote the arts and letters.
The collection comprises around 7,000 recorded objects, relating mainly to Mesolongi and covering the period from antiquity to the present day. It includes historical and church relics, manuscripts, ancient objects, an art gallery, rare editions, metalwork, costumes and salt cellars. Part of it is permanently on display and part is shown in temporary exhibitions.
