About the museum
The Documentation and Education Centre of the Theopetra Cave displays selected finds from the excavation research in the important prehistoric cave of Theopetra. In a special room, visitors can become familiar with the concepts of archaeology and prehistory through interactive educational applications. The centre has educational programmes, a car park and a ramp.
The cave lies opposite the Meteora, above the village of Theopetra, and is the first cave to be excavated in Thessaly. Thanks to continuous deposits and remains of human activity, the transition from the Palaeolithic to the Neolithic way of life and the evolution of humans from Neanderthals to Homo sapiens have been studied there. The cave also yielded the oldest human footprints discovered in Greece, 130,000 years old, two of which belong to children aged four to five.
