About the museum
Trikala honours the composer and lyricist Vasilis Tsitsanis, born in the town, with the “Vasilis Tsitsanis Research Centre”, the “Tsitsanis Museum”. The museum is housed in the building of the former Trikala prison, at 1 Karditsis Street, a building that in the past served as a hammam and a prison and was restored with ESPA 2007–2013 funding. The site was handed over to the city in 2017.
The collections include photographs, musical instruments, scores, records of authentic performances and personal objects of the composer, as well as tools and machinery from the old prison and objects of the daily life of the inmates. The complex also has a recording studio, a library and an events hall, while on the western façade of the old administration building there is a mosaic portrait of Tsitsanis.
