About the museum
The Byzantine town of Fanari is mentioned in an imperial chrysobull of 1289 and frequently appears in the sources throughout the 14th century. Because of its position on the axis of communication between Epirus and Thessaly, it acquired particular strategic importance.
The small fortification on the summit of the hill rising above the town covers an area of about 2.5 hectares and is reinforced by six projecting towers. Inside are the ruins of various buildings, including two cisterns, which came to light during the restoration works on the castle.
