About the museum
The beginnings of the museum go back to 1966, when the teacher and archaeologist Themistoklis Katsaros, with the help of his pupils, started a collection at the Lyceum of Agios Kirykos. Initially it included 50 objects; by 1975 it already had 168, and over the decades it was enriched with evidence of the everyday and professional life of the Ikarians.
The Folklore and History Museum was inaugurated on 18 July 2010 by the Municipality of Agios Kirykos, after the renovation of the building of the Cultural Centre. The museological study is by Themistoklis Katsaros, and the exhibits, dated from the 17th century to 1945, are presented thematically. The display cases come from a donation by the National Archaeological Museum. Traditional costumes, textiles and objects of various periods reflect the customs and way of life of the island’s residents.
