About the museum
The treasury is housed in the Monastery of Saint John the Theologian, which overlooks the town of Chora on Patmos. The monastery was founded by Saint Christodoulos, to whom the island had been granted by a chrysobull of the Byzantine emperor Alexios I Komnenos in 1087.
The museum occupies two wings and safeguards the treasures of the monastery. On display are Byzantine and post-Byzantine relics: documents, manuscripts and early printed books, icons, silver church vessels, vestments, woodcarvings, jewellery and votive gifts, as well as antiquities and large Ottoman and Slavic collections of documents and works of art.
The exhibits include portable icons, such as an icon of Saint Nicholas from the 11th century and an icon of Saint Christodoulos from the 17th century, gold-embroidered vestments set with precious stones, valuable manuscripts and the monastery’s archival documents, among them the chrysobull of Alexios I Komnenos. Revenue from tickets and the shop helps fund the upkeep of the museum and its restoration workshops.
