About the museum
The Alekos Fassianos Museum is housed in a building that was remodelled and designed by the architect Kyriakos Krokos in close collaboration with the painter Alekos Fassianos. The work was completed in 1995 and the museum opened to the public in 2023.
The permanent exhibition presents works by the artist from 1956 until the end of his life. It includes early works of the 1960s with an abstract character and from his first years in Paris, works influenced by Byzantine art, collages and mixed techniques. “The Myth of the Neighbourhood” depicts images and experiences from the Agios Pavlos neighbourhood, where he grew up, with childhood heroes who meet the heroes of Greek mythology.
Besides painting, the exhibition presents design works that Fassianos created for his home, and archival material: writings, illustrations, sets and costumes for theatrical works by Ionesco, Sartre and Aristophanes. The space was curated by the artist himself down to the details, from door handles to wall paintings and mosaic floors.
