About the museum
The museum is housed in one of the four stone buildings of the complex of the former Military Police (EAT-ESA) in Eleftherias Park in Athens. The site and its surroundings were declared a historic monument in 1997. The building has been granted for use to the Association of Imprisoned and Exiled Resistance Fighters 1967–1974 (SFEA), which runs the museum, and is supervised by the Municipality of Athens.
During the dictatorship of 1967–1974 the complex was used to detain, interrogate and torture political prisoners. Thousands of people passed through it before being tried by military courts and sent to prison or exile.
The original cells, interrogation rooms and torture chambers have been preserved as they were. Display cases show documents, personal objects of resistance fighters, lists of political prisoners, photographs from prisons and places of exile, as well as illegal and legal newspapers, proclamations and declarations of the period 1967–1974. In the surrounding area stands the bust of the naval officer Spyros Moustaklis.
