About the museum
The Eleftherios Venizelos Museum was founded in 1984 by the City of Athens and opened to the public on 30 March 1986. It is housed in a separate building next to the Arts Centre of the City of Athens in Eleftherias Park, Athens. The building previously belonged to a complex of military installations and was adapted in the mid-1980s to host the exhibition.
The core of the collections comes from the material gathered by the Cretans Zacharias Makatounis and his son Antonios, who donated it to the City of Athens with the aim of establishing a museum. The collections include personal objects of the politician and documents relating to historical events, as well as archives of documents and photographs. The museum also has a special library and audiovisual material to support research.
The museum is in the process of presenting its collections anew according to modern museological principles, and for this reason its operation has been temporarily suspended. The City of Athens has also taken on the general repair of the historic building, with a new roof, restoration of the facades and provision for access by people with disabilities.
