About the museum

The museum was founded in 1977 on the basis of the private collection of the composer and musicologist Christodoulos Chalaris. From 1997 to 2010 the exhibition was housed in a renovated three-storey building in the Ladadika district of Thessaloniki, and it was then moved to Santorini.

Today it is housed in the old community building of Oia, in a central location in the settlement, near the pedestrian street of Oia. The collection includes more than 200 instruments used on the Greek mainland from 2800 BC to the early 20th century. The instruments were reconstructed with the help of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, on the basis of philological and visual evidence such as vessels, figurines and sculptures. In some display cases visitors can hear the sound of the instruments.
