About the museum
The Lignos Folklore Museum is in Kontochori, about one kilometre from Fira, in a building of 1861. It was founded by Emmanouil A. Lignos, a lawyer and journalist, publisher of the newspaper “Thiraika Nea”, with the aim of showing how the island’s residents lived before tourist development.
The house was restored in 1973 so that it could be used as a museum, and in 1993 auxiliary buildings were added for new wings. It remained undamaged by the great earthquake of 1956. In the courtyard is the small church of Agios Konstantinos, built in memory of Konstantis Lignos, an earlier owner of the estate.
Visitors walk through a cave house, furnished like a traditional village house of Santorini, with household objects and objects of family and social life. The kanava stands out: an old underground winery with a wine press, barrels and old vessels, where Santorini grapes were made into wine. Also on display is a cave from a historic pumice quarry. Professions of the island are recreated with authentic tools, such as those of the carpenter, the cooper and the cobbler. The museum also has an art gallery with works inspired by Santorini and a historical archive with lithographs, manuscripts and books about the island.
