About the museum
The Gyzi Megaron cultural centre was founded in the late 1970s on the initiative and with the financial support of the Catholic Diocese of Thira. It is housed in one of the few surviving mansions of the 17th and 18th centuries in the Catholic quarter of Fira, which belonged to the Venetian Gyzi family.
Creating the museum was a basic aim of the cultural centre from the start. In the renovated ground-floor rooms of the mansion, where the island architecture of the 18th century has been preserved, documents, paintings, photographs and other objects from the archive of the Catholic Diocese of Thira are exhibited, illuminating the history of Santorini from Venetian rule to the present.
The Gyzi Megaron also hosts concerts, theatre performances, lectures and exhibitions, and every summer the Gyzi Megaron Summer Festival is held.
