About the museum
The Roman emperor Galerius chose Thessaloniki as his seat in 299 AD. Aware of the strategic importance of the city, he planned an ambitious project that would turn it into the administrative capital of his territories.
One of his most important works was the palace complex in the centre of Roman Thessaloniki, a remarkable monument of late antiquity. It extended over more than 150,000 square metres and included the Rotunda, the Arch of Galerius (Kamara), the palace, the octagon and the hippodrome.
Today the palace is open to visitors. Its exemplary restoration and presentation was awarded by the European Union and Europa Nostra, and has turned it into an organised archaeological site in the centre of the modern city.
