About the museum

The Mouseio Ekmageion was founded at the School of Philosophy of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki between 1928 and 1930 by the professor of Classical Archaeology Konstantinos Romaios, with the aim of making the teaching of ancient art complete and visual. Initially it was housed in three rooms of the central building. In the 1970s it was moved to the basement of the school's new building, where the first room, today called “Christos Tsountas”, was set up between 1975 and 1982. In 1990–91 the largest room, today called “Konstantinos Romaios”, with a small amphitheatre, was created, and in 2000 it was extended with a new space and new acquisitions.

Most of the exhibits are plaster casts of ancient sculptures, but there are also copies of miniature works, copies of Minoan, Mycenaean, early Christian and Byzantine wall paintings, and copies of Byzantine icons. Part of the display consists of original works, mainly ceramics and miniature works from donations and older excavations of the school, as well as coins.

In the Christos Tsountas room the casts of the god from the Artemision and of the Charioteer of Delphi dominate, as well as slabs of the west frieze of the Parthenon. In the Konstantinos Romaios room are displayed the colossal kouros of Sounion, casts of the arch of Galerius, the pediments of the temple of Zeus at Olympia and a large collection of Archaic kouroi and korai from various workshops. The museum is aimed first and foremost at archaeology students, but also welcomes pupils and the wider public.
