About the museum
The Natural History Museum of the Aegean belongs to the Konstantinos and Maria Zimalis Foundation, which was founded in 1992 to create a modern natural history museum on Samos. The foundation also took on the housing and care of the small palaeontological museum of Mytilinioi, with 118 exhibits, which had operated since 1967. The new building, completed with the foundation’s funds, opened in August 1994. It covers 1,600 square metres on three levels, with exhibition halls, laboratories, offices and a library, while the surrounding area of 20 stremmata is intended to become a botanical garden.
The palaeontological exhibition presents fossils of animals that lived on the island, mainly in the area of the village of Mytilinioi, 8–10 million years ago, in the Turolian age. The zoological collection includes animals and birds from Samos, the rest of Greece and the world, together with typical Australian animals, a donation from the Samian Brotherhood of Sydney. About 300 specimens are displayed in the mineral and rock section. There is also a marine life section with shells, fish models and models of Aegean boats, and a botanical section with a collection of dried plants of Samos and the Aegean.
