About the museum
The Archaeological Museum of Samos is housed in two buildings. The old two-storey neoclassical building, the “Paschaleio Archaiofylakeio”, was built in 1912, and the new building was added in the 1980s with funding from the Volkswagen Foundation.
The old building displays finds from the Heraion of Samos, a sanctuary of Hera of worldwide renown in its time and today a UNESCO monument: statues, vessels and dedications of bronze, ivory and wood. The new building houses the sculpture gallery with important examples of Archaic sculpture.
The main exhibits are the Kouros of Samos, about five metres tall and dating to around 580 BC, and the group of votive sculptures by the artist Geneleos. This group was dedicated to Hera by a wealthy island family and is regarded as a masterpiece of early Archaic sculpture: it depicted the seated mother Phileia and the half-reclining father, beside statues of their four children.
