About the museum
The Archaeological Museum of Pythagoreio is housed in a newly built building in the centre of the modern town, on the site of the ancient city of Samos, close to an important open-air archaeological site. Around 3,000 exhibits, mainly finds from excavations, trace the historical development of the ancient city and its countryside from the 4th millennium BC to the 7th century AD.
The objects are arranged chronologically and by theme and shed light on various aspects of the development of ancient Samos. A marble inscription at the entrance records that the Samians distributed free grain to their citizens, purchased from a special public fund fed by wealthy residents. Notable finds include those from the Neolithic settlement at Kastro, the Geometric necropolis, Archaic and Roman sculptures, Samian cups and kouroi.
The most important exhibits are the marble statue of the Roman emperor Trajan (2.71 m tall), a hoard of 300 Byzantine coins, and the statue of Hera (540 BC), a dedication by Aiakes, father of the tyrant Polycrates. In the enclosed area around the museum are architectural elements of buildings from the ancient city and part of an excavated ancient neighbourhood.
