About the museum
In 1984 the Holy Metropolis of Syros, on the initiative of Metropolitan Dorotheos I of Syros, founded an ecclesiastical treasury in Ermoupoli. The then archimandrite, later Metropolitan Dorotheos II, toured the islands of the Metropolis and gathered icons, church vessels and vestments from churches and monasteries. Since 2011 the collection has been housed in a fully renovated hall on the second floor of a building of the Metropolis, near the church of Agios Nikolaos.
The museum displays sacred icons of the 17th and 18th centuries from churches of the Metropolis, episcopal and priestly vestments, liturgical vessels, episcopal pectoral icons and crosiers, gold embroidery and carved wooden objects. In one corner of the hall a room of an island house has been reconstructed, giving a small impression of folk life. On the ground floor a Digital Ecclesiastical Museum operates with interactive touch screens, virtual reality devices and a three-dimensional hologram, presenting the ecclesiastical and cultural wealth of the islands of the Metropolis.
