About the museum
The museum originated from the Hellenic Post (ELTA) and philatelic associations, which wished to collect, preserve and present historical objects of the postal service in Greece. Its founding received legal status in 1966, and since 1977 it has been housed in the present building next to the Panathenaic Stadium (Kallimarmaro), which was donated by the philatelist Nia Andrea Stratou.
In 2013 the museum was transferred from the structure of ELTA to the General Secretariat of Telecommunications and Post, and today it is an organic unit of the Ministry of Digital Governance. Since 2017 the premises have been gradually renovated and modernised, without interrupting visits.
The museum is at the same time a museum of art and technology, as important Greek engravers have worked over time on the production of stamps, while old postal machines and devices are also exhibited. Its collections include the philatelic and postal collection, an archive of historical records, a photographic archive and a library.
