About the museum
The Panathenaic Stadium is often called the Kallimarmaro and was built of white Attic marble. It has its roots in an ancient stadium in Athens where athletic contests were held, and in more recent times it was rebuilt to host the first modern Olympic Games in 1896. It is therefore regarded as the first Olympic stadium of the modern era.
Today the monument belongs to Greece’s athletic and Olympic history and is managed by the Hellenic Olympic Committee. Visitors can walk up the stands, go down to the track and pass through the vaulted passage. The stadium museum presents a permanent exhibition of posters and torches of the Olympic Games from 1896 to the present day.
At the entrance an automatic audio guide of about 30 minutes is offered, which is included in the full and reduced tickets.
