About the museum
The Municipal Museum of the Kalavrytan Holocaust was founded by a prefectural decision of 1986, which was replaced in 1994 and amended in 1999 and 2007, and operates as a public-law legal entity of the Municipality of Kalavryta. Its aim is to keep alive the memory of the Kalavryta massacre of 13 December 1943 and of the related events in the wider area.
It is housed in the former primary school of Kalavryta, which was designated a work of art and historic monument in 1986 and a historic site, together with the surrounding area, in 1991. The restoration of the building was carried out on the basis of a study by the Ministry of Culture and was co-financed by the European Union under the “Culture” programme of the third Community Support Framework 2000–2006, with a budget of about €1.17 million.
The museum was inaugurated on 9 January 2005 by the then President of the Republic, Konstantinos Stefanopoulos. It has a mobile guided-tour app and educational programmes, and operates as an accredited museum. Visitors learn about the historical material, testimonies and events of the German military operation in Kalavryta.
