About the museum
The Dimotiko Istoriko kai Laografiko Mouseio Aigiou, the Municipal Historical and Folklore Museum of Aigio, was founded in 1994 by the Historical Folklore Society of Aigialeia and bears the name of Andreas Lontos. It is housed in a traditional two-storey stone building with walls one metre thick and large windows. The building is linked to the Lontos family and once belonged to a wealthy family of currant merchants. The museum operates as a municipal enterprise.
On the ground floor, across four rooms, the folklore collection presents household utensils, costumes, agricultural tools, looms and weaving materials. On the upper floor, in six rooms, historical objects from Ottoman rule to 1950 are displayed, including weapons, costumes, coins, documents, paintings, photographs and military material, as well as relics of the Greek War of Independence (1821).
All exhibits come from donations by residents of Aigio, and many are family heirlooms. The museum has a reading room and library with historical and folklore books. It also displays objects associated with Andreas Lontos, such as his gravestone, medals and a flag considered to be the first flag of the Revolution.
