About the museum
The Mycenaean settlement of Vounteni, surrounded by fertile land and with access both to the sea and to the mountains, was for 500 years (1500–1000 BC) the core of many smaller settlements in the wider area, and their inhabitants could find refuge here in times of danger.
The Mycenaean Park of Patras covers a total of 180 stremmata and offers a panoramic view over the Gulf of Patras. The most impressive sight is the cemetery, uncovered in 1923, where excavations brought to light 78 chamber tombs. The grave goods, most of which are displayed in the Archaeological Museum of Patras, testify to the prosperity and trade contacts of the inhabitants. The tombs are circular, square, horseshoe-shaped, quadrangular with a dome, or irregular, and show both the architectural skill of their builders and the preferences of their owners.
