About the museum
The Archaeological Museum of Aigio is housed in the building of the old Municipal Market, built in 1890 and attributed to the German architect Ernst Ziller, although there is no written evidence for this. It is a building with a large central courtyard, which was flanked by the market’s shops. From 1983 it was granted to the Ministry of Culture to found the museum, which was inaugurated in 1994.
After the earthquake of 1995 the building and part of the finds were damaged, and the museum reopened in 1999 after repairs. Today cultural events are also held in the courtyard.
The galleries present finds from the excavations in Aigio and in the other ancient cities of Aigialeia, such as Helike, Aigeira, Keryneia, Rhypes and Pellene, which together with the cities of western Achaea formed the Achaean League. The exhibition covers the Neolithic, Mycenaean and Geometric periods up to the Roman era. One of the most important exhibits is the marble statue of Zeus Aigiochos.
