About the museum
The Capodistrias Museum – Center of Capodistrian Studies is the only museum in Greece devoted exclusively to the life and work of Ioannis Kapodistrias, the first Governor of Greece. It is housed in the family's former country house at Koukouritsa, in Evropoulous, which had belonged to the Kapodistrias family since at least the 18th century.
In 1979 Maria Kapodistria-Desylla donated the estate and personal objects of the family to three historic Corfiot institutions: the Reading Society of Corfu, the Philharmonic Society of Corfu and the Society of Corfiot Studies. The museum was founded in 1981, and in 1995 the Ministry of Culture designated the whole complex a listed monument. It closed for renovation in 2012, and its renewed form was inaugurated in October 2017.
The permanent exhibition follows a chronological order, from his childhood and political career in the Septinsular Republic, through his diplomatic career in Europe and Russia, to his first government of Greece and his assassination in Nafplio. The centre is combined with a digital archive and research work on the Capodistrian era.
