About the museum
The Solomos Museum is housed in the house where the national poet Dionysios Solomos lived in the last years of his life on Corfu. He settled there in early August 1832, composed his most mature works and died in this house on 9 February 1857 (old calendar: 21 February). The building was destroyed by Italian bombing in 1941.
The Society of Corfiot Studies, founded in 1952, took on the restoration of the house, with designs and supervision by the engineers Georgios Linardos and Renos Paipetis and the architect Ioannis Kollas. Work began in 1961 and was completed in 1964, and the museum was gradually set up. After eight months of maintenance work and a new layout of the exhibits, funded by the National Bank of Greece, it reopened to the public in October 2009.
The ground floor presents the reception of the poet's work by younger artists and writers, with manuscripts, prints and editions of “The Woman of Zakynthos”. The first floor is the main museum, with portraits of Solomos and his friends, the family tree and coat of arms, display cases on the stages of his life and work, and the poet's original desk. The Society also has a rich library with publications on Solomos.
