About the museum
The Ecclesiastical Museum of the Holy Metropolis of Thessaloniki is located on the ground floor of the metropolitan palace, next to the metropolitan church of Saint Gregory Palamas. The inspiration and support for the project came from Metropolitan Anthimos of Thessaloniki.
The space was designed with particular attention to architecture and museum planning and with special lighting, so that the theological dimension of the icon is brought out. The exhibition explains the dogmatic significance of the icon for the body of the Church, the way in which the mystery of the Divine Incarnation is depicted in icons, and the way in which hope for salvation is strengthened for the faithful. At the same time, the more recent history of the Metropolis of Thessaloniki is presented.
