About the museum

The Mouseio Mikis Theodorakis is housed in the former primary school of Zatouna, a stone-built building of 1919 that operated as a school until 1973. In 1995 it was transferred to the village community, and the museum was inaugurated on 7 October 2006 in the presence of the composer himself.

Mikis Theodorakis was exiled to Zatouna in 1968, during the years of the dictatorship, together with his family. He lived there until October 1969 and composed the song cycles “Arkadia I and II”. The museum presents photographs, manuscripts, concert posters, personal objects and documents of the composer, as well as his musical and political activity. Its operation is based on a programme agreement between the Municipality of Gortynia and the Peloponnese Development Organisation.
