About the museum
The Theodoros Papagiannis Museum of Contemporary Art opened in 2009 in the village of Elliniko in Ioannina, in the Municipality of North Tzoumerka, on the initiative of the sculptor, who comes from the village. It is housed in a large stone-built school, with a courtyard of 7 stremmata that has been laid out as a sculpture park.
About 200 works, sculptures and drawings are on display indoors, and around 100 outdoors. The core concepts of the museum are environmental protection and recycling, while the main themes are learning, bread and benefaction. The collection also includes a separate series of medals and coins, as well as portraits of important figures.
Every summer, from 1 to 20 August, a sculpture symposium is held with Greek and foreign artists, and the new sculptures are added to the collection. During the same period cultural events with theatre, music, book presentations and talks are held. A route of around 5 kilometres from the village entrance to Moni Tsoukas features large sculptures in various materials. The museum also organises educational programmes for schools.
