About the museum

The Byzantine Museum of Ioannina is located within an archaeological park, in the south-eastern acropolis of the Castle, the Itch Kale. It was founded in 1995 and is housed on the ground floor of the Royal Pavilion, a building with features of the local architectural tradition, which the Greek Army built in 1958 for the royal family.

Its seven halls display sculptures, coins, icons, wall paintings, books and small objects from all over Epirus, which trace the history and art of the region from the 4th to the 19th century. At the entrance visitors see a large 19th-century wall painting of the victory of Constantine the Great over Maxentius, while in the neighbouring Treasury the silverwork in which Epirus excelled is presented.

The museum also looks after the Fetiye Mosque opposite. There its non-figurative wall paintings are preserved, along with two late Byzantine columns incorporated into the mihrab.
