Opening hoursAdmission €8 Wheelchair accessible Café

About the museum

The Museum of Silversmithing was inaugurated in September 2016 and belongs to the network of museums of the Piraeus Bank Group Cultural Foundation (PIOP). The museological study was approved in 2009, the project was included in the EPAN II programme in 2011 and the restoration works began in 2012.

It is housed on two levels in the western bastion of the south-eastern acropolis, Itch Kale, of the Castle of Ioannina and in the building of the old kitchens. Its aim is to preserve knowledge of Epirot silversmithing and to connect it with the society of its time.

On the first level, the history and technology of silversmithing in Epirus are presented, with traditional techniques of shaping and decoration, through texts, videos and multimedia. On the second level a collection of Epirot silver and goldsmithing from the 18th to the 20th century is displayed, with jewellery, weapons and military equipment, household silverware and personal objects. The exhibition focuses mainly on the post-Byzantine period, from the 15th century, and includes references to the contemporary silversmithing of the region, as well as interactive digital games.
