About the museum
The archaeological treasures of Karditsa remained little known for a long time, until in 2010 the Archaeological Museum of Karditsa opened and presented the archaeological wealth of the region.
The exhibition includes finds from the Palaeolithic to Late Antiquity and is organised chronologically and by theme. It approaches the past with humans at its centre, with references to private and public life.
One of the most interesting narratives of the museum is based on an inscription from Delphi of the 2nd century BC, which sheds light on the little-known history of the ancient cities of Kierion, Orthi, Metropolis, Gomphoi and Argithea. All of them have impressive finds, such as the almost life-size clay horse head and the cult statue of Apollo Hoplites from the temple at Metropolis, as well as the marble sarcophagus from Gomphoi depicting the abduction of Persephone.
