About the museum
The museum is housed in the Topsin mansion in Gefyra, about 25 km north-west of Thessaloniki. The building was erected in the early 20th century, around 1905, as a summer residence for the Italian-Jewish Giako Modiano. Between 24 and 26 October 1912 it served as the headquarters of the Greek army, and the negotiations that led to the handover of Thessaloniki took place there.
The Ministry of National Defence acquired the building in 1999 and converted it into a museum, which operates under the supervision of the Hellenic Army General Staff. The exhibition traces the course of the Balkan Wars, one of the most important moments in modern Greek history, through relics of war.
On display are weapons of the period, such as pistols, revolvers and rifles, uniforms and officers’ insignia, decorations and medals, postcards, furniture and household items from the mansion, as well as objects from the armies that took part in the wars. In the courtyard stands the funerary monument of Hasan Tahsin Pasha, commander of Thessaloniki during the negotiations, and of his son.
