About the museum
The museum was founded in 1964 by Angelos and Niki Goulandris, two of the most important visionaries of environmental protection in modern Greece. Today it is a charitable foundation whose mission is research, education and the protection of nature, and it is called the National Museum of Natural History Goulandris.
The permanent natural history exhibition combines scientific research with artistic design. The first rooms, devoted to plant biology, were designed by the British Museum of Natural History. Later the museum created its own zoology and geology spaces under the guidance of artistic director Petros Zampelis.
In the neoclassical building and at the GAIA Centre, designed by Michael Photiadis – Associate Architects, visitors can also see the exhibitions “Climate Change and Us” and “Biodiversity. Everything Is Connected”, as well as the 360° spectacle “The Truth Face to Face”. The museum has scientific collections, a library and a garden, where a restaurant operates.
