About the museum

An exhibition on the history of the gendarmerie and the police opened in the Tarnaméra manor house on 31 August 1996. The collection of objects was assembled and arranged thanks to the work of Dr. Francsics Ottó, then chief of police in Heves, and Dr. Gulyás István, a veterinarian. The building also houses a local-history exhibition.

In 2002 the exhibition material was taken over by the Rendőrség-történeti Múzeum (Police History Museum) in Budapest, run by the National Police Headquarters, and since then the castle has operated as one of its exhibition sites. In the entrance hall, a world map greets visitors, with small flags marking the professional links of police organisations on each continent.

In the main hall, nearly nine hundred police insignia from many countries of the world are displayed on twelve panels. The upper-floor rooms present scenes of gendarmerie and police life before 1945 and in the period from 1945 to 1989, including a duty briefing from the 1970s. In five further rooms of the castle, the exhibition “Világ Rendőrségei” (Police Forces of the World) presents 145 complete police uniforms from 92 countries, as well as gendarme and pandur uniforms; it is the largest police uniform collection in the world.
