About the museum

Babits Mihály and his wife, Tanner Ilona (Török Sophie), bought the house in Esztergom in March 1924. Until 1941, with one exception, the poet spent seventeen summers here, and several of his important poems were written in Esztergom. The writers of the Nyugat circle called the house the “Hungarian Parnassus”.

The house originally consisted of a single room and a kitchen and was gradually extended. After Babits’s death it fell into disrepair and was rented out for years. The Országos Műemléki Felügyelőség (National Office for the Protection of Historic Monuments) declared it a protected monument in 1960, and it reopened as a museum on 6 August 1961.

The highlight of the memorial house is the autograph wall, on which visiting writers, poets and artists signed their names. The veranda opens onto a view of the Várhegy (Castle Hill), the Basilica and the Danube. The memorial house is run by the Balassa Bálint Múzeum (Balassa Bálint Museum).
