About the museum
The museum’s predecessor was founded in 1993 as the Vízügyi Múzeum, Levéltár és Könyvgyűjtemény (Water Management Museum, Archive and Book Collection). The Magyar Környezetvédelmi és Vízügyi Múzeum (Hungarian Museum of Environmental Protection and Water Management), known to the public as the Duna Múzeum, has welcomed visitors again in the renovated building since 9 October 2001.
The exhibition venue is in the former chapter house (káptalani ház) on Kölcsey utca in Esztergom, a Baroque building completed in 1730. The building was already linked with water management before the museum was founded: during the flood of 1838 it housed the town’s relief distribution centre.
The aim of the museum is to present the use of water and other natural resources by combining scientific and technical knowledge, thereby strengthening responsibility for environmental and water protection. The permanent exhibition Vízeum presents the past and present of water management, river regulation, navigation, the history of bathing, Lake Balaton, mineral water and the history of soda water. The Látványtár (Showcase Storage), opened in 2014, presents the most interesting objects of the collection with interactive multimedia tools.
