About the museum
The Bajor Gizi Színészmúzeum (Bajor Gizi Actors’ Museum) is a branch of the Országos Színháztörténeti Múzeum és Intézet (National Museum and Institute of Theatre History). The originally single-storey neo-Baroque house was bought in 1928 by Beyer Rudolf, Bajor Gizi’s brother, and the actress had it converted into a grand villa based on plans by the architect Országh Béla. Bajor Gizi moved in at the beginning of 1933 and shared the upper floor with her third husband, the ear, nose and throat specialist Germán Tibor. Their home soon became a favourite meeting place of Budapest’s artistic world, and during the dark years of the Second World War their salon served as a refuge.
Bajor Gizi died on 12 February 1951. The museum opened on the first anniversary of her death, in 1952, on the initiative of Gobbi Hilda. The first exhibition presented relics of Bajor Gizi, Jászai Mari and Márkus Emília. Over the years the other rooms of the villa were also freed up, so new museum rooms were set up from time to time.
After the turn of the millennium the museum was completely transformed: a new exhibition opened on the upper floor in 2002 and on the ground floor in 2010. The permanent exhibition “Szép ház, nagy park közepén…” (“A house in the middle of a large park…”) commemorates the house’s former owner and Gobbi Hilda, who founded the museum. The upper-floor “Kulisszák között” (“Behind the scenes”) shows the creative process of theatre, from the read-through to the premiere, and guides visitors through outstanding moments of Hungarian theatre history. On the ground floor, temporary exhibitions compiled from the theatre-history collection present major theatrical events and the careers of theatre artists.
